Wenlan Lu
Wenlan Lu was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan. She was surrounded by cans of oil pigments and all kinds of brushes in her childhood as her father was a traditional temple painter, who painted oriental Door Guardians and Dragon Pillars. Wenlan earned her bachelor’s degree in Japanese Language and Literature from Soochow University in Taipei. After graduating from the University in 1999, she was trained and flew with EVA AIR, a Taiwan based international airline, where she worked as a flight attendant. Her passion for arts had been reawakened during the years as a flight attendant. Visiting museums became her obsession while staying in Europe or other major cities in the world. During her days off, Wenlan Lu also studied pressed-flower making and flower arranging. She also explored the use of pastels, colored pencil and watercolors, in combination with her pressed flowers, to create her first landscapes and still lifes.
Wenlan moved to California on 2006. While exploring her new life there, she continued pressing flowers and designing fashion accessories using pressed flowers, among other materials. In 2007, she founded a sole proprietorship of this artwork, called Wenland, and attended many Art Fairs in the Bay Area from 2007 to 2010. Her works sold well, and she developed a strong following. Then, Wenlan and her husband started a family and her two sons were born in 2009 and 2012. She became a stay-at-home mom, but continued doing an on-line business of her handmade jewelry and pressed-flower artwork. When her boys got old enough, she sought change and discovered her true inner desire -- To evolve from a crafts person into a fine art artist! Initially, Wenlan started with the basics of art study on her own, but then she took a painting class at Stanford Continuing Studies. She found that she loves observing nature and painting outside in ‘plein air’. Wenlan decided to enter the Master of Fine Art program at the Academy of Art University in 2014, as a part time student. She has found fulfillment through this art-study and personal growth through deepened education in the arts.
Wenlan Lu now lives in the Bay Area, CA, with her inspirational sons and her husband. In addition to painting, she enjoys volunteering and teaching in the Art Docent program at her children’s elementary school. Through her paintings, she hopes to transform everyday scenes into personal moments and to show viewers the unexpected beauty in the world around them.
